$12K donation for Mitton Village Parkette

A project for the Mitton Village Parkette has been completely funded following a generous donation.

Imperial Sarnia donated $12,707 to the Mitton Village Citizens Collective, which was then donated to the City of Sarnia.

The money will go towards six picnic tables and a message board in the parkette.

City of Sarnia Communications Manager Steve Henschel said getting this donation is exciting.

"It's certainly going to go a long way toward beautifying that community space and we're certainly grateful for the support and it's definitely unique in the way it's all come together," he said.

The project has been ongoing since 2022 and Henschel said at that time, there was a pop-up parkette.

"It was very popular, it was kind of part of ongoing efforts to drive targeted investments in Mitton Village, it's one of two areas identified in our community improvement plan for revitalization," he said.

According to Henschel, since the pop up parkette was popular at the end of 2022 a permanent one was put in place later that year.

He said it was basic with some tree wells, shade sails, some trees, lighting, and a concrete pad.

"This (donation) really adds on to that project and it's something that the Mitton Village Citizens Collective drove," he said.

There is currently no set date on when the project will be completed, but Henschel said the city has hit the ground running.

According to Henschel, the picnic tables are in the process of being ordered.

"We're certainly moving forward with this, we're expediting things to get it done as soon as possible," Henschel said.
