Sarnia-Lambton United Way gearing up for Novemburger

Over a dozen local restaurants will feature a special hamburger on their menus next month.

The Sarnia-Lambton United Way will hold its first ever Novemburger.

Director of Development and Communications Ryan Doyle said, so far, 14 restaurants have signed up to take part in the initiative.

"It's pretty exciting," said Doyle. "Some other United Ways have had some great success getting some local businesses to work with them so we kind of reached out to a bunch of restaurants in the Sarnia-Lambton area to try to get a new and unique burger at each of their restaurants and a portion of the proceeds ($2) will go to the United Way."

Participating restaurants include Sherwood Village Restaurant, Stokes Inland, Burger Rebellion, Rondo's Pizza, and Haywood's Hideaway in Brigden.

Doyle said the United Way in Thunder Bay has been doing this for years.

"They've run like a full on event for Novemburger and have a lot of ambassador programs. Their mayor, their chief of police all kind of get in on a judging competition," said Doyle. "I'm hoping we can get there, maybe in a couple of years. Right now we're testing the waters."

Money raised from Novemburger will support the annual fundraising campaign.

"To date, we've raised $609,000 which is about 41 per cent of our goal," said Doyle. "We're nearing the halfway point which is pretty cool this early in the campaign. Compared to last year, we're still a little bit ahead which is good. Was a little nervous for a minute there, but then we caught back up."

The goal for this year's campaign is $1.487 million.

Money supports 17 local agencies including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity and Lambton Elderly Outreach.
