Remaining Fairwinds Lodge units set to reopen in November after 2023 fire

The remaining units at Fairwinds Lodge are set to open next month, 22 months after part of the retirement residence in Sarnia was destroyed by fire.

General Manager Tina Mel said the north section, where the fire started and where most of the damage was sustained, has been completely rebuilt.

"We officially have our opening date of November 25, 2024," said Mel. "We already have move-ins scheduled for that day and we're really excited to welcome many new residents to the north end of our building."

Firefighters from Sarnia, Point Edward, St. Clair Township and Port Huron, responded to the blaze at the Michigan Avenue site in January 2023. There were no injuries.

The central and south areas of the building, which were restored or renovated, reopened last November.

"It has been a quick turnaround. It's been incredible to see the community come together and restore Fairwinds to our original operations, so we can continue to serve the seniors here in Sarnia-Lambton.

Mel said there are units still available for rent. "For the north end, we actually have over half of the suites already spoken for," she said. "We're finishing up some of the painting, flooring and all of the new finishes that we're adding to the suites including the cabinetry etc."

A number of events are planned before the end of the year to show off the changes and hopefully attract new tenants.

"For those that are interested in exploring what (we) have to offer, or just want to come in and see our renovations, every Thursday night for the month of October and November we do have drop in tours (on) Thursdays. So from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. people can come in, take a guided tour and look at some of our suites and the renovations that we've done," Mel said.

An open house is planned to celebrate the grand opening on December 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
