St. Clair Street project nearing end of phase one

Phase two of a multi-million dollar reconstruction project in the Village of Point Edward will not proceed as planned until the spring of 2025.

The village recently posted an update about the St. Clair Street and Lite Street project to social media, roughly six months after phase one began in April.

"Underground work is nearly completed, and asphalt is expected to be laid in the coming week in the business entrances and along the boulevard on the south side of the construction project," read a post on X. "Paving of the road is expected to occur soon afterward."

The post also said phases two through four will not happen until next year.

However, work may still take place in the boulevards and in certain areas so construction in 2025 can proceed more efficiently.

Initially, all four phases were expected to be completed by September. The project involved a complete rebuild of St. Clair Street (and a section of Lite Street) between Front Street and Michigan Avenue.

The project hit a number of roadblocks over the past several months, which resulted in Cope Construction taking over phase one.

The new contractor started working in the area in late August after the village terminated its agreement with McNally Excavating Ltd. in July.

It's unknown at this point how much the project will end up costing. The original contract was awarded for $6 million.
