New playground opens at Sarnia elementary school

Students and staff celebrated the opening of the new kindergarten playground at King George VI Public School.

Guests were welcomed to the playground Thursday to see the work that has been completed over the last couple of years.

Seaway Kiwanis were acknowledged for their contribution of $10,750 towards the $50,000 project.

Principal Adam Carswell said the new playground has been a positive change for the kindergarten and Alternative Learning and Life Skills Program (ALLP) students.

"It's really great for these kids socially, emotionally and physically in terms of developing their gross motor [ability]," he said. " It's just all really important and getting outside and getting fresh air every day because we couldn't."

Carswell said in the past if it rained or became slushy the play area would become a safety issue for the children.

Students started to use the playground in September after it was installed in the summer.

Carswell said accessibility was important for the playground.

"This swing is paramount to [accessibility] as well, so this is a game changer for 60 kindergarten kids and 10 ALLP students.

The first part of the playground project started in 2022, when a grass area, teeter totter and car were installed.

Additionally, the school is hoping to extend the tarmac near the playground to build a bike trail for the students and to have an outdoor classroom.

Roughly $10,000 has been raised for the classroom and an additional $3,000 has been donated by the Sarnia Sting through Sting Assists.
