United Church Reverend challenging others to Walk a Mile

The Reverend at Grace United Church is challenging all communities of faith in Sarnia-Lambton to bring more participants, and raise more money, than his congregation at the Walk a Mile event next month.

Grace United Church Reverend Dr. Kenji Marui said they've noticed the attendance has been lacking for the Women's Interval Home fundraiser in recent years.

"To raise the stakes and put my money where my mouth is, I am willing to provide worship leadership for the faith community that raises the most money," Marui said. "Hopefully, you would consider that a 'prize' worth winning – at the very least, your pastor/priest/minister/worship leader could have a morning/evening off!"

He said his congregation raised about $2,300 for the event in 2023.

"I'm looking forward to a great turnout and positive rivalry energy. I would be happy to lose to another church if they can outpace us, but I think our folks are going to, as always, give it our best too," Marui said.

The event is described as a powerful statement of solidarity and support for those affected by domestic violence.

"It's a wonderful morning with some entertainment, but also compelling stories from survivors. You get to learn a lot more about what the women's interval home does and why it's important that they're here. I think they've got some raffles and other pieces too that can be done to spread the news and support their work," said Marui.

The Women’s Interval Home of Sarnia-Lambton was established in 1977 to provide emergency shelter and counselling services to women who have experienced abuse and their children.

Since then, it has grown to include a 24-hour crisis support line, transition and housing support services and child witness counselling services.

The 10th annual event will be held at Lambton Mall on November 2, 2024. Registration opens at 10:30 a.m. with the walk starting in front of Marshalls/HomeSense at noon.

Teams can be registered online.
