Hockey fans are invited to come out to Pat Stapleton Arena on December 12 to take part in a longtime Sarnia Legionnaires' tradition.
It's the GOJHL club's Penny M. Lilley Memorial Wooly Toss, with donations supporting the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Salvation Army and the Inn of the Good Shepherd.
When the team scores its first goal against Kitchener-Waterloo, fans are encouraged to throw hats, scarves, gloves and mitts onto the ice.
The fundraiser, which has been happening for about 15 years, is named after team president Terry Lilley's wife.
Lilley said it's a tradition that is near and dear to him.
"It's very similar to the Sarnia Sting's Teddy Bear Toss," said Lilley. "Years ago Matt Churchill, who started the Wooly Toss, suggested doing something different from that. We went with the woolies, and it's just grown immensely since then."
Lilley said this year's goal is to exceed the 3,600 items donated in 2023. They also contributed $2,700 in gift certificates for the Yule Glow hamper program.
"This year, Smith Funeral Home came and signed on as a co-sponsor," he said. "We try and bring in as much as we can. My daughter is involved with it as well and my son is too. Every year my daughter hopes for more and more. I told her that I didn't know if we could keep going like this, it's just quite an achievement."
In celebration of the Legionnaires' 75th anniversary, admission to the game is just $7.50.
