Covering cars in Christmas lights is illegal: police

You may have noticed some cars around Sarnia-Lambton covered in Christmas lights this holiday season.

The social media trend has prompted city police to issue a reminder about vehicle light requirements.

They said while this may seem like a fun way to show your holiday spirit, it presents a number of safety hazards on the road.

According to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), motor vehicles are only permitted to have white or amber lights on the front of the vehicle and red lights on the back.

Police said the use of coloured or flashing lights is restricted to emergency vehicles, volunteer medical responders, and certain ministry provincial offences employees.

The HTA regulations are in place to ensure the safety of all motorists.
