Homeowner confronts break in suspect

Home security cameras helped Sarnia police locate and arrest a break and enter suspect Tuesday.

Police said a homeowner on Nelson Street confronted a man attempting to break into the garage at around 2 a.m.

The two struggled before the suspect took off on a bike.

Members of the Sarnia Police Service Community Response Division apprehended the suspect a short distance away.

Police said his identity was confirmed by the security cameras on the homeowner's property.

The 44-year-old is charged with trespassing at night and break and enter.

City police are advising residents to keep propane canisters secured and out of sight.

Police said with numerous homeless encampments, occupants are heating their outdoor enclosures with the use of propane heaters, and they've become a sought after item.

"It gives thieves a reason to enter your property if these are left in sight," read a Sarnia police news release. "Once they are on your property, other opportunities to steal items will present themselves once they enter garages, homes, or sheds."
