New apartments, Walmart upgrades among November building permits

A new apartment building in Sarnia gave November building stats a big boost.

Sarnia City Hall issued a total of 40 permits last month, valued at $35,984,548.

Over half of that was a $21 million permit issued to Glos Associates Inc. for a six-storey 90 unit apartment building, and associated site work, on Afton Drive near Murphy Road.

A $6.6 million permit was issued for upgrades at Wal-Mart, including updating the current tire, lube express area to ecommerce, exterior work, new flooring and general maintenance.

The monthly statistics also include a $500,000 permit for an addition at an industrial property at 1411 Plank Road.

Year-over-year construction activity is slower with a total of 412 permits issued so far in 2024, compared to 438 during the same time frame last year. However, the year to date total is sitting at $166,875,644, up over $63 million over last year.

There were three permits issued for single-family dwellings in November, bringing the year-to-date total for new homes to 20.
