Now that the City of Sarnia is not providing curbside Christmas tree collection, DeGroot's Nurseries has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton to provide the service to support the non-profit organization.
Habitat CEO David Waters said John DeGroot contacted them about the curbside program for Sarnia and Bright's Grove residents, after the city approved a recommendation in November to cancel the curbside collection services in order to save money.
Waters said residents can register online or by visiting the ReStore on London Line to have their tree collected between January 2 and January 10, 2025.
"They can just put their tree out in that 10 day stretch and we'll day by day, collect all the trees that have signed up for the program," Waters said.
The pick-up fee is $20.
"We'll pay the staff who are doing the tree collection for us and then anything we make extra on anything we do goes right into our build program, so it helps build homes," said Waters.
The collected trees will be taken to DeGroot's to be turned into mulch and recycled back into the environment.
Residents can also drop their tree off at DeGroot's, where a donation jar will be set up inside the main store (cash only).
Waters said registrations for the tree collection program will remain open until January 1, 2025.
