Petrolia 150 hosts last events

A year-long celebration to mark Petrolia's 150th anniversary will culminate with a few New Year's events.

Several small and large-scale events were held throughout the past 12 months, which included a three-day outdoor music festival in August

Director of Parks, Marketing, Arts and Communications Laurissa Ellsworth previously said the Petrolia 150 organizing committee spent years planning for the milestone.

"It's been a great year for the Town of Petrolia," said Mayor R. Brad Loosley. "It's been a fantastic year and I am super proud of all the volunteers and the 150 committee who have worked hard on all of the different events."

The Petrolia 150 closing party will begin with a free skate, music, and games at the Greenwood Recreation Centre from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on December 31. Free hot dogs and pop will be provided, courtesy of Ross and Cathy O'Hara.

Fireworks are scheduled to go off at Greenwood Park at 8 p.m.

A free shuttle service will be provided by Langs Bus Lines. Shuttles will begin at 3:45 p.m. until 30 minutes after the fireworks end. Details about shuttle routes can be found on Petrolia 150's Facebook page.

The Petrolia 150 wrap up celebration will be held on New Years Day, outside of Victoria Hall at 11 a.m. The 150 flag will be lowered and a youth mosaic mural will be unveiled.

The mural was created by local children and youth this past spring.

Loosley said the mural also holds personal significance for him as his granddaughter painted a square for the mural of Victoria Hall.

The Town of Petrolia was presented with plaques for the successful celebrations held this past year during a December 9 council meeting.

Warwick Township Mayor Todd Case and St. Clair Township Mayor/ Lambton County Deputy Warden Jeff Agar also attended the meeting to extend their congratulations.
