UPDATE: $1M damage reported in Petrolia fire

Damage in a fire Wednesday afternoon in Petrolia is pegged at $1 million.

Lambton OPP and volunteer firefighters responded to an industrial fire on Centre Street shortly after 2:20 p.m.

Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Chief Rick Cousins said in an email to Sarnia News Today, the cause of the blaze is undetermined.

He said the pole barn type building contained oil and gas for small construction tools, while large diesel tanks and propane cylinders were stored outside.

In a post to Facebook, the department said despite significant damage, some equipment was able to be saved with assistance from Wyoming and St. Clair Township fire departments. No injuries were reported.

Centre Street was closed between James Street and Discovery Line for about 12 hours to allow emergency crews to extinguish the fire safely.

Cousins said the bitter cold temperatures caused havoc with nozzles and hydrants freezing up during fire suppression activities.
