Imperial Bonspiel returns to SGCC for 94th year

A tradition dating back to the 1930s returns to the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club (SGCC) this weekend.

The 94th Imperial Bonspiel is set to take place Friday to Sunday at the historic Errol Road facility.

The popular event will welcome 32 open teams from Ontario and Michigan, with a total of 128 players competing for the title.

Head Golf Professional and Curling Draw Master Jamie Parkinson said a lot of hard work goes into planning the bonspiel each year.

"We've got a great committee here for the Imperial Bonspiel," said Parkinson. "Many of the committee members have been doing this for a lot of years. There's lots of planning and preparations leading up to the event, including reviewing what goes well each year and where we feel we can make improvements. We've got a great few days lined up here for the participants."

The bonspiel will feature a packed schedule of draws, beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Saturday's draws are set for 9:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:45 p.m., and 4 p.m. There are also matches on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., and the finals are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Parkinson said spectators are welcome all weekend.

"There's no charge to attend," he said. "Spectators are welcome to come up to the curling lounge and there will be great viewing from there. This year, we're celebrating 150 years of curling in Sarnia and we've seen a great response for all of our bonspiels."

Last year's winner was Mark Bice whose team competes out of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club.

He, along with teammates Codey Maus, Jonathan Doan, and Drew Davey will be back to defend their title on home ice.

Other notable past champions in the field include Dale Kelly, Doug Booth, Heath McCormick, Colin Parr, Grant Collison, and Fred Howe, promising an exciting weekend of curling action.
