Southwestern Ontario to get messy weather for the long weekend

It will be a snowy and blustery Family Day weekend in southwestern Ontario.

A winter storm warning was issued by Environment Canada.

The weather agency is tracking a winter storm system that will bring a batch of snow, freezing rain, and freezing drizzle beginning Saturday afternoon, though a second wave is due to cross the area on Sunday.

Snow totals may exceed 30 centimetres.

"Conditions will rapidly deteriorate Sunday morning as a more significant area of snow and blowing snow arrives. An additional 10 to 20 centimetres is likely," the alert said.

Snow may be accompanied by high wind gusts, meaning that blowing snow may reduce visibility in some areas.

The weather agency said travel will be hazardous and advises to postpone non-essential travel.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow," Environment Canada said.
