Cyclist facing charges after fleeing & fighting Sarnia police officer

A 29-year-old Sarnia man is facing several charges after trying to flee from police.

At around 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning, an officer in the area of Devine Street and Brock Street South saw a man on a bike traveling southbound on the snow-covered road, against the flow of traffic.

The officer stopped the cyclist to speak with him through the cruiser's passenger window, however, the cyclist tried to pedal away.

The man got off his bike and fled on foot with the officer getting out of their vehicle to try and catch him.

The officer caught up, however, the man started to fight back. During the struggle, a firearm fell out of the man's pocket.

The officer immediately deployed their Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), though they still needed to use physical force to get the man under control.

After searching the man, the officer found two knives and a small bag of fentanyl. It was also determined the gun was a BB gun.

The man has since been charged with assaulting a police officer, three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, three counts of carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of fentanyl. He also faces two charges for not complying with court orders.

He was taken to the hospital and has since been released.
