Man charged after physical fight with Sarnia police officer

A 43-year-old man is facing several charges after allegedly stealing and fighting a Sarnia police officer.

At around 9:45 p.m. on Friday, police received a report of a person stealing from vehicles on Oxford Street.

After arriving, an officer found a man matching the suspect's description sitting inside a vehicle. The man then fled on foot, jumping a nearby fence.

The officer tackled the man and a physical fight ensued. The man was eventually arrested after being hit multiple times by the officer, though he didn't need any medical attention.

A search afterward found multiple items that were reportedly stolen from different vehicles.

The man has since been charged with resisting arrest, trespassing at night, theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
