St. Clair Twp. family escapes burning home

Damage is estimated at about $500,000 in a house fire Thursday morning.

Firefighters from Corunna, Courtright and Beecher stations responded to a structure fire on Fairview Boulevard in Corunna at around 5:45 a.m.

St. Clair Township Fire Chief Richard Boyes said the residents were able to escape the burning home uninjured.

"There was five occupants and some pets, and all occupants got out safely and the dog got out, but we have some cats unaccounted for," he said.

Boyes said the structure was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

"It was a defensive attack from the start," said Boyes. "Firefighters did a good job and we used tower 22 extensively to get to the upper floors and areas of the building. Again, a good job by all the stations to limit the damage. There is some exposure damage to the residence next door to the north from radiant heat, but it didn't spread to the house."

He said the fire started on the exterior of the one-and-half-storey structure.

"The fire did start at the front of the house on the exterior and then advanced to the inside of the house," said Boyes. "It's a wood framed dwelling with vinyl siding so it went up fairly quickly and excess winds didn't help."

The exact cause is undetermined, but it's not believed to be suspicious in nature.

Crews were on scene until around 8 a.m.
