International Plowing Match to make Lambton County return after 36 years

The International Plowing Match (IPM) and Rural Expo is returning to Lambton County in 2027, for the first time in 36 years.

The Lambton County Plowmen's Association made the announcement on Tuesday.

Chair Dennis Bryson said they're thrilled to host the historic event, which brings plowing enthusiasts, farmers and visitors from across the globe together to celebrate agricultural excellence and community spirit.

"This event not only highlights our community's dedication to agriculture, but also unites the diverse talents and traditions of plowing from around the world. We look forward to welcoming visitors and showcasing what makes Lambton County truly special," Bryson said.

The five day event will showcase the latest in agricultural practices and equipment, traditional plowing competitions, and local food, crafts, and entertainment.

The local plowmen's association has hosted the event three times in the past; in 1923, 1973 and 1991.

"In '91 it was in Marthaville, which is between Petrolia and Wyoming, and in '73 it was in the Alvinston area. In '23, they say it was in the Sarnia area, and they say that Lambton College sits on part of that area that was used back in the day," Bryson said.

Further details, including the location and dates, will be released in the coming months.

"I'd like to think that the one location we have in mind, will be the location. But, we can't positively say that right now because the Ontario Plowmen's Association has to come and look it over and apparently Ontario Hydro has to come too and see how it looks for poles and three phase hydro etcetera... and we're all set with that," Bryson said.

The association said it is collaborating with local businesses, farmers, and community organizers to ensure a successful and inclusive event.

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton Executive Director Mark Perrin said the event will provide a significant boost to the economy and local tourism.

“Visitors will have the opportunity to experience our beautiful landscapes, dynamic culture, and warm hospitality. We can’t wait for what promises to be an unforgettable event,” said Perrin.

Ontario Plowmen's Association (OPA) President Melvin Switzer shared local enthusiasm for the event.

"Lambton County has a rich farming narrative, and we believe this event will shine a spotlight on the innovative and sustainable practices that shape our agricultural community,” Switzer said in a news release.
