Fallen workers remembered on National Day of Mourning

Local residents will gather to remember those who were killed or injured on the job.

Monday, April 28 is the National Day of Mourning.

President of the Sarnia and District Labour Council Nick Dochstader said it's a day for workplaces, unions and communities to pause and reflect on workplace safety and renew efforts to prevent future workplace tragedies

Dochstader said this year's ceremony will once again be held at the East Street firehall.

"Fire Chief Jeff Weber will give a short talk about a commitment workplace safety, Sandra Kinart who is a representative of Victim's of Chemical Valley will say some words, and then we will do the standard laying of the wreath and then the laying of the flowers that commemorate the folks that we've lost or have been injured in a workplace tragedy."

Dochstader says the hope is to return to the Missing Worker Memorial at Centennial Park in time for next year's ceremony.

"We've been working with the city, representatives from a few different groups, have got together and we're moving forward," he said. "The hope is that it will be back there. We appreciate the firefighters because they've been gracious hosts and extended the invitation for as long as we need it, but the intent is to have it down at the memorial."

The National Day of Mourning was first held in 1991 to recognize the victims of the devastating Westray coal mine explosion in Nova Scotia.

Dochstader says there's definitely been improvements over the years to workplace health and safety, but more can always be done.

"One death is too many," he said. "But yes, it would be correct to say that things have improved over the years. There has been legislation passed for asbestos, getting it out of the workplaces and getting it out of circulation, things like that have been pushed by groups that participate in events like this."

Monday's hour-long ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Clifford Hansen Fire Station on East Street.

The public is invited to attend.
