UPDATE: iPhone crash alert leads police to vehicle in ditch

A 24-year-old London woman has been charged with impaired driving in a serious single-vehicle collision in the area of McGregor Side Road and Plank Road.

Sarnia police responded to the area at around 5 a.m. Wednesday after getting an iPhone crash detection alert.

Police said the vehicle was found upside down in a ditch, partially submerged in water, with significant front-end damage.

The driver suffered minor injuries, and was allegedly showing signs of impairment.

It's alleged several empty cans of Twisted Tea were spotted inside the vehicle, and the driver was placed under arrest.

She was transported to the hospital for treatment, where a blood sample was taken. The accused was later released from custody with a future court date.

The Sarnia Police Service is reminding the public of the serious risks and consequences associated with impaired driving.

Police said crashes involving alcohol or drugs are preventable and continue to pose a threat to the safety of all road users.
