Sarnia landmark to come down

A once popular Sarnia restaurant will be torn down.

The Chipican, which first opened its doors in 1948, has been fenced off and demolition is imminent.

The City of Sarnia confirmed a demolition permit has been issued for the property.

The Chipican Restaurant was renamed the Lake Point Grillhouse and Lounge in 2018, with hopes of breathing new life into the Christina Street site.  It closed in 2021 due to the pandemic.

Since then it has been sitting empty.

The neighbouring former Chipican Motel was purchased in the fall of 2023 and renovated into luxury short-term rental units called the Luxe.

Further details regarding future plans for the vacant land were not immediately available.
