Sarnia school hosts tech hub open house

Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School will host an open house as the Sarnia school prepares to launch as a Technological Education Hub in September.

The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) said the hub will provide students from Grades 10 to 12 with hands-on learning opportunities in sectors including construction, landscaping, culinary, and hairstyling.

“Our new Tech Hub is designed to prepare students for the future with hands-on learning, state-of-the-art facilities, and real-world cooperative education placements,” said Principal Jim Keane. “This open house is the perfect opportunity to see firsthand the exciting programs and opportunities available.”

The tech hub open house will be held on Wednesday, June 4 at 6 p.m.

The LKDSB said Grade 10 students can take two technology courses alongside core academic courses, while senior students can take part in a specialist high skills major program, which allows students to tailor their education toward a specific sector.

The school board announced plans to re-envision the space earlier this year.

In the past, individual education plans were provided for AMSS students, as many required specialized programming. However, those students were redirected to mainstream high schools after the province eliminated applied courses and moved to de-streaming classes
