INEOS completes decommissioning work

INEOS Styrolution says it has safely completed the decommissioning work at its Sarnia site.

The final phase of decommissioning started at the beginning of June.

"As of June 13, 2025, all process units and pipeline activities planned between June 1 – 19, 2025, are now complete," the company said in a message shared through Sarnia-Lambton Alerts. "We sincerely appreciate the community’s patience and understanding throughout this process."

INEOS said the health and safety of the community, its employees, and the environment continues to be its highest priority.

The styrene monomer production site on Tashmoo Avenue has been shut down since April 2024, after orders were placed on the facility in response to members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation feeling ill due to elevated levels of benzene emissions.

In June 2024, INEOS announced plans to permanently close the site.

Benzene destocking at the Sarnia facility wrapped up in the fall.
