Driver faces charges after OPP cruiser hit in attempted stop

A 33-year-old is facing drug, weapon, and assault charges after allegedly striking a Lambton OPP cruiser during an attempted traffic stop early Tuesday morning.

Just after 1:15 a.m., officers tried to pull over a car for a Highway Traffic Act violation on Bentpath Line, west of Annett Road in Dawn-Euphemia.

Police said the driver struck a police vehicle, causing significant damage, before driving off.

The suspect was eventually apprehended, and faces the following charges.

- Flight from a peace officer

- Dangerous operation

- Obstructing a peace officer

- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

- Unauthorized possession of a weapon

- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000

- Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon

- Possession of a schedule I substance - Methamphetamine

There were no injuries reported.

The accused was being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
