Optimist Club looks forward to big turnout for Canada Day

The Bright's Grove Optimist Club will celebrate Canada Day this weekend with the traditional parade, live music, and family-friendly activities.

Canada Day in the Grove will be held on Saturday, June 28.

"We do like to host the Canada Day celebrations in Bright's Grove the Saturday before the big holiday just so that everyone can get a chance to kind of make it out and show some community spirit," said club vice president Ben Turner.

Festivities will begin with the parade.

Participants are asked to meet at Wildwood Park at 10 a.m. to get organized before the parade starts at 11 a.m.

"A really big, fun part of the parade is when the kids in the community can decorate their bikes or their wagons -- or just walk, wearing the Canada Day colours," Turner said. "For kids who want to decorate their bikes or march in the parade, we do offer a free hot dog and pop if they join in. They'll get a ticket for that that they can redeem at the Optimist barbeque at Kenwick Park."

Turner said kids in the parade will be near the front of the line. No pre-registration is required.

The parade will travel along Hamilton Road, to Waterworks Road, to Old Lakeshore Road, and will end at Kenwick Park. Road closures along the parade route will be in place from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Afternoon activities at Kenwick Park will be held from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m.

"We have The Martone's playing on the stage, which the local carpenters union has built for us," Turner said. "Also in the park, we have a barbeque put on by the Optimist Club, we have some kiddie rides as well -- which we offer at the back of the Kenwick Park, lots of activities for kids to do. It's really a great time."

Turner said free evening entertainment will also be provided.

"The Bright's Grove Family Pharmacy sponsors a concert at nighttime so we have Brenda's Band playing from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.," he said. "It's a family-friendly, all ages event. We do have a licensed area as well. It's really just a nice way to cap off the day and kick off the summer holidays."

Further details about Saturday's festivities -- including possible rain notices -- will be posted to their website and the club's Facebook page.

Warwick Township is also celebrating Canada Day a little early.

From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, there will be lawn games, inflatables, music, free hot dogs and cupcakes at Centennial Park.

The celebration wraps up with fireworks at dusk at the Warwick Conservation Area at 6101 Warwick Village Road.
