Public input sought on Mitton Village streetscape

The City of Sarnia is appealing for ideas to help breathe new life into Mitton Village.

A survey was launched for residents and businesses owners to offer their opinions on the Mitton streetscape design.

The city is preparing to move forward with combined sewer separation on Mitton Street from Wellington Street to Davis Street in 2026, pending budgetary allocation.

Manager of Development and Transportation Alister Brown said this is an opportunity to get feedback from the community.

"There's work that's planned, it's going to result in the street needing to be reconstructed, so we saw a good opportunity to put a little bit of a positive spin on the streetscape in that area," he said.

Enhancing the streetscape will also improve capacity and safety for all modes of travel.

Design work has started on the underground infrastructure already but the surface design work will happen after the survey.

"[The survey] is an opportunity for our community and particularly the folks in Mitton Village to really get a say and have some input towards what their community is going to look like moving forward in the future," Brown said.

Business owners in Mitton Village will also get their say on the streetscape with a separate survey, which has already been distributed.

"Their voices are really important in this process to understand what their needs are, what their current challenges may be and how we can best address those in this design," said Brown.

The public and business survey are open until Thursday, July 31 at 4:30 p.m.

Brown said results will then be looked over by city staff.

"[We'll] start to work on concept development for the street design, once we do have a few concepts that we're comfortable with we will bring those back out to the public for further evaluations," he said.

There are also other engagement opportunities expected later this year.
