Repairs underway after fire vessel drifts ashore

Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services needed a rescue itself on Monday.

Marine 1 experienced an engine failure in Lake Huron at about 4:15 p.m.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said the boat ended up drifting ashore at Canatara beach.

"We were actually performing a training exercise at the time," said Otis. "We contacted a towing company for some assistance getting [the vessel] off the shore."

Otis said the boat has been taken out of service for the time being.

"We're currently doing some repairs on the boat. We still have both our personal watercraft, we have Canadian Coast Guard, American Coast Guard, mutual aid agreements... so there's more than enough resources that we can rely on if things occur," Otis said.

Otis said the boat was removed from the water and placed on its trailer just after 6 p.m
