Banners in Petrolia to honour veterans

Time is running out to sponsor memorial banners, which will be placed throughout downtown Petrolia as a way to honour local veterans.

The Town of Petrolia partnered with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 216 to bring back the banner program after it launched in 2023.

"We had a lot of people reach out and ask if we would do it because they were doing it in other towns," said Marketing and Special Events Associate Thera Wagner.

Residents, groups, or organizations can sponsor a memorial banner for $275 plus HST.

"We will get the banners made. They go up usually at the end of October and they'll stay up until after Remembrance Day," Wager said.

The banners will be held for three years and then returned to the sponsor.

Each banner will be double-sided. Wagner said they will include a photo, the veteran's name, the service they were in, and the sponsor's name.

"Honouring and remembering those that served with this program is a visual reminder of the sacrifices that many made for our freedom,” Wagner said in a statement.

After expenses, proceeds will go to the Petrolia Legion.

Wagner said the program didn't run last year but in 2023, about $3,000 went to the legion.

"We're looking forward to bringing it back in 2025 and we can't wait to get some new banners up," she said.

As of July 28, five new banners have been confirmed.

Applications will be accepted until August 5.
