Burn ban lifted in Petrolia

A burn ban has been lifted in Petrolia after the area received some much-needed rainfall this week.

The burn ban was issued on August 10, in the middle of a multi-day heat event.

The heat warning for Sarnia-Lambton ended early Wednesday morning, after severe thunderstorms briefly moved over Sarnia, Petrolia, and west Lambton.

On Thursday, the Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department said it will allow rural burning again, which includes all types of recreational fires, and it will issue outdoor rural burn permits.

Residents are reminded to be mindful of their neighbours who may be sensitive to smoke, not to burn during air quality advisories issued by Environment Canada, and to abide by Petrolia's open-air burning bylaw.

The Town of Petrolia released a list of bylaw reminders, which include:

- The recreational open fire is to be controlled and supervised at all times.

- The fire pit shall be confined to a pit (two feet by two feet) with a spark guard to limit flame size and reduce the spread of embers.

- Confined to an area with a minimum distance of three meters from and adjacent buildings or property lines.

- Only burn clean, dry firewood or charcoal briquettes.

- Always have a water source nearby in the event the fire needs to be extinguished.
