Kiwanis Club supports student literacy

The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia-Lambton Golden K has donated $4,000 to Literacy Lambton to support the organization's Train Your Brain program.

The free math and language literacy program is offered to children in Grades 3 and 4.

The Kiwanis Club said funds were raised by volunteering through the Jackpot Time, Sarnia Bingo program, which runs through the Ontario Charitable Gaming Association and allows a portion of the money raised to be donated.

The local club often donates to different programs and initiatives, recognizing the benefits they provide in the community.

However, members also recognized one of their own during a recent meeting.

David Marshall was presented with the highest recognition the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada can bestow, the Mel Osborne Fellowship Award.

Marshall has dedicated 30 years to Kiwanis initiatives and previously served twice as club president.

"[He] has faithfully embodied the Kiwanis spirit in action — whether wearing a red suit as Santa Claus in a crowded gymnasium at the center, preparing early morning meals for hungry school children, or delivering food and dignity through Red Cross Meals on Wheels and the Inn of the Good Shepherd," read a media release. "His legacy is not only for the thousands of meals served, but the countless hearts lifted by his presence."

The award was presented to Marshall on August 12.
