City of Sarnia shifts fall recreation registration format

Registration is changing at the Strangway Centre ahead of the fall programs launching in October.

The City of Sarnia is transitioning to a four-season program model.

Previously, registration opened for both fall and winter at the same time, and then spring and summer opened later on in the year.

Activities Programmer Mike Neely said this allows more flexibility.

He said planning so far in advance may have been difficult for the public as well as the instructors.

"We want to reduce the amount of administrative fees people are getting hit with, give them some more flexibility on what they can select with the programming that we do officer and not have to plan so far out in advance," Neely said.

The city has worked with other municipalities to investigate the new format and has found many are transitioning as well.

Neely said in September there will be no programming while the centre goes through maintenance and operational upgrades but the centre will remain open.

"So when everyone returns in October there will be a few new things around the centre that hopefully excite them and kind of enhance the programming that is already in store," he said.

The Strangway Centre will also be introducing new programs in the fall.

Neely said it will be reintroducing its Voices in Harmony program after they had to remove it prior to the pandemic because of not having an instructor.

"The demand was there, people were asking and inquiring at the front desk, so just trying to follow the needs of the community, so I definitely think that one will take off right off the hop in the fall," he said.

Other new programs include dancercise, Italian: basic, Chair Qi Gong, pick-up hockey 50+ and the facts and chat series.

There will also be familiar programs returning to the fall line-up such as watercolours and flow yoga.

Neely said residents can view the programs on September 2 ahead of registration, which opens at 8:30 a.m. on September 16.

"It gives them a couple of weeks to sift through what we offer or choose what works for their schedule, but they can register in person both at the Strangway Community Centre or City Hall, they can also call in," he said.

Residents can also register online.
