Dogs attack senior resident walking their pet

Provincial police are reminding pet owners to keep their dogs leashed or properly contained after a vicious attack at Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation.

Members of the Oneida Nation Police Service, Middlesex OPP, and Oneida Emergency Medical Services were called to Bodkin Road on August 26, shortly before 8 p.m.

OPP said a 71-year-old was walking their dog when two unleashed pit bulls, without their owner present, attacked.

The victim was able to escape to their home and call police.

When officers arrived, one of the pit bulls charged at police. OPP said as a result, the officer shot and killed the animal to ensure public and officer safety.

The senior resident was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. However, their dog died.

OPP told Sarnia News Today the second pit bull has been placed in a mandatory 10-day quarantine, as per standard procedure.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Middlesex County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
