Local runners to lace up for annual Terry Fox Run

A Canadian tradition in support of cancer research will mark 45 years in Sarnia Sunday. The annual Terry Fox Run will be held at Canatara Park, at Terry's Loop near the bandshell.

Committee member Laurie Rome said last year, the local community raised a new record high amount of money.

"We raised $64,978.55, which is the highest we've ever done, so it's going to be hard to beat, but we can do it," said Rome.

Opening ceremonies will be at 8:45 a.m. with the run/walk set to begin at 9:15 a.m.

"We want to be sure people know they don't have to run," said Rome. "I would say 50 per cent of the people are walking, pushing wagons and strollers."

She said it's a family friendly event complete with a small rollercoaster for the kids, a silent auction and lemonade stand.

"There's a family in Point Edward, and they do a lemonade stand in honour of their daughter/mother who passed away a few years ago," said Rome. "So they've been raising a lot of money and bring your quarters, loonies and toonies for that."

Runs are also planned Sunday in Petrolia and Alvinston.

Since its inception, the Terry Fox Run has raised over $900 million through events across the country.

Funds raised go towards innovative cancer research through the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI).
