Flag plaza closed, damaged in crash

The Rotary flag plaza near the Blue Water Bridge is closed to the public for the time being.

Dale Wilcox, spokesperson with the Rotary Club of Sarnia Bluewaterland, said the Canadian flag pole was damaged in an incident Sunday morning.

"A large truck drove over the garden wall and hit the Canadian flag pole," said Wilcox. "The incident has been investigated, and as a precaution the area is closed."

She said none of the memorial bricks were damaged in the crash, and thankfully no injuries were reported.

Wilcox said they're aware the closure may be disappointing to visitors along the waterfront.

"But, it is a safety precaution. The plaza is actually on LAWSS property and as soon as the pole has been checked by the appropriate personnel and deemed safe, the flags will go up again and the area reopened, she said."

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
