Shopping for a cause: annual Show and Sale empowers local kids

Funds from the 52nd annual Show and Sale will help hundreds of local kids.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton will host its annual fundraiser on November 8 and 9 at Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School on Michigan Avenue.

Fundraising coordinator Melissa Matthews said over 100 vendors are registered for the event.

"Everything from pottery to home decor, handmade crafts, clothing, food, one-of-a-kind gifts and Christmas decor," said Matthews. "We've also got a raffle table that will hold over 100 prizes and we've also got our little baking table."

All of the funds raised over the two days will go back into the different programs offered through Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

"Last year we were able to provide mentoring to over 600 kids locally, so that money goes towards our one-on-one matching program and our in-schools mentoring program as well," said Matthews.

She said they're always looking for volunteers to sign up as a mentor.

"Even if you just have one hour a week, you could volunteer to be an in-school one-on-one mentor," said Matthews. "For a one-on-one community based mentor, it's just a few hours a week. So, we're looking for mentors all the time. We've got kids, some who have been waiting a couple months and some who have been waiting closer to a year or more."

The Show and Sale runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is $10. Children 12 and under get in free.

"This year included in the admission we've added free coffee from McDonald's and we're also having a kids craft area from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and a photo station with Santa as well, so we're really excited to add that in this year," said Matthews.
