Sarnia man charged following grocery store theft

A 25-year-old man is facing multiple charges after an alleged shoplifting led to the discovery of suspected illicit drugs and other items.

Sarnia police were called shortly before 9 a.m. on Wednesday to a grocery store on Murphy Street, for a theft-in-progress.

Store security observed the man taking items and putting them in a backpack and in his pockets. He then paid for two small yogurts, but left the store without paying for anything else.

Police confronted the man as he exited and arrested him. A search revealed $432 worth of stolen goods. The man also had on him pepper spray, suspected methamphetamine, credit cards that did not belong to him, and a pipe with drug residue.

The suspect was already under court-imposed conditions, including staying away from that store and not having bank cards that did not belong to him.

He is charged with theft under $5,000, disguise with intent, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and three counts of breach of probation.

The charges have not been proven in court. The man was released from custody with bail conditions.
