SCF names award after dedicated volunteer

The Sarnia Community Foundation (SCF) is honouring a longtime dedicated volunteer with the creation of a new award.

The Bill Hazlitt Business Award will be presented this spring to a graduating Lambton College business student who scores a high academic achievement, and supports the community.

Hazlitt was the Treasurer of SCF for over 30 years before retiring in 2024.

Executive Director Mike Barron said he's exemplified exceptional financial stewardship, unwavering commitment, and a profound dedication to the mission of SCF.

Barron said Hazlitt was a great mentor for him and many others.

"Just his knowledge," said Barron. "This foundation started out, back when we opened, with a $500 investment. When we turn the page to 2026, we probably will be over $16 million in assets. His presence here allowed for great governance and great growth. He's such a knowledgeable man with great support for the community."

Barron said the award is worth $1,000 and could help graduates with things like rent or moving to a new city for a job.

Lambton College President and CEO Rob Kardas is pleased.

“We are honoured the Sarnia Community Foundation has chosen to recognize Lambton College Business students who are working to strengthen Sarnia-Lambton the way Bill has over the course of his career,” said Kardas. "The support provided to our students through academic awards, scholarships, and bursaries is invaluable, and we are looking forward to seeing the impact the Bill Hazlitt Business Award has on our community."
