More volunteers needed for Adopt-A-Driveway program

With more snow in the forecast, a few more volunteers are needed to help clear the driveways of seniors and those living with disabilities.

City of Sarnia Communications Manager Steve Henschel said this has been one of the best years ever for the Adopt-a-Driveway program, in terms of volunteer turnout.

"It's been really heartwarming to see and we're really grateful to see all of these volunteers stepping up," he said. "So far, we've connected about 33 volunteers with homes but we have just a few left."

The remaining properties are located in the areas of Sherwood Village, Lambton Mall, and Heritage Park. Specifically, along Willa Court, Cardiff Drive, Cardiff Court, Carriage Way, Frost Avenue, Bennett Street, and Sutton Street.

"Historically, there has been a waitlist for this program but thanks to the community's generosity this year, it looks like we might actually get through the entire waitlist," he said. "It's really exciting!"

Residents can choose to sign up for the program as a volunteer, either individually or as a group.

"It's a great opportunity for high school students to get those volunteer hours in," Henschel said.

There is no specific deadline to apply, but considering the amount of snowfall so far, Henschel said they're looking to pair volunteers with remaining homeowners as soon as possible.

"We supply the shovels, the salt, everything you need to actually do the job and connect you with the homeowner," he said. "Beyond that, you just have to be available to actually go out and do the shoveling whenever it snows more than three inches."

There is an orientation program, but it will be delivered online.

Those interested in signing up as a volunteer can do so through the city's website
