Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School (AMSS) students will be relocating to Lambton College while construction is underway at the school.
The Lambton Kent District School Board has announced that it is moving forward with removing and replacing the Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) roofing at AMSS as part of a province-wide initiative supported by dedicated funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education.
RAAC, which has a lightweight concrete material used in construction between the 1950s and 1980s, was identified in certain areas in the school, including above the technology wing, gymnasium, and boiler room. Although it is safe for students and staff to be there during the planning process, the work needed above the boiler room involves an extended construction timeline.
To make sure that learning goes uninterrupted, students will be relocated to Lambton College from March to June 2026.
“This has really introduced a great opportunity for our students,” said Director of Education, Gary Girardi, in a news release “They will largely benefit from an enriched learning experience at Lambton College while we revitalize AMSS for generations to come.”
Through the partnership between the schools, students will have access to the college and its facilities, fostering real-world skills.
“We look forward to welcoming these students to Lambton College,” said Rob Kardas, President & CEO, Lambton College. “We’re excited to be working with our partners at Lambton Kent District School Board to ensure a seamless academic year for Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School and to showcase the welcoming, hands-on, student-centered environment that defines Lambton College.”
LKDSB said updates will be shared as timelines are finalized. An information session will be held at AMSS on Wednesday, January 28, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.
