Man arrested after incident at Sarnia police headquarters

One man has been arrested following an incident at Sarnia Police Service headquarters.

At approximately 11:55 a.m. on Friday, a man entered the employee-only parking lot located at the rear of the Sarnia Police Service building. The area is clearly marked as restricted and is reserved for police officers and civilian staff.

An off-duty officer arriving at the station encountered the man near the employee entrance. Police say the individual was behaving erratically, prompting the officer to remain with him until on-duty officers could respond.

Uniformed officers soon arrived and attempted to speak with the man. During the interaction, officers observed unusual behaviour, including sudden and exaggerated movements. Police say the man may have been under the influence of an unknown substance.

As officers continued speaking with him, they learned the man had outstanding arrest warrants. When they attempted to take him into custody, he resisted by refusing to free his hands and comply with commands. This led to additional officers being called to assist.

According to police, multiple officers were required to safely subdue and restrain the man. Even after being handcuffed, he continued to resist as he was escorted into the station. Once inside the custody area, they discovered the man was in possession of a knife.

The 37-year-old man from Sarnia was held for bail and charged with three counts of failing to comply with a probation order, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and obstructing a peace officer by resisting arrest.

The man remains in custody following his bail hearing.
