One week into the new year, Sarnia-Lambton residents are still adjusting to provincial recycling changes.
On January 1, Circular Materials launched a uniformed list of products that can be recycled right across Ontario.
Newly accepted items include deodorant, toothpaste tubes, ice cream tubs, black plastic containers and frozen juice containers.
Coffee cups and other paper-based and plastic-lined beverage cups can also be put in the blue bin after a pilot program in some locations.
Circular Materials said early results from the pilot showed an eight per cent increase in collected polycoated paperboard.
The changes come as Ontario fully transitions to a new extended producer responsibility (EPR) blue box recycling system.
It will be fully funded and operated by producers of packaging and paper products, and is recognized as an effective mechanism to improve recycling rates.
