IPV investigation leads to weapons seizure

A prohibited weapon was seized from a Sarnia home following an intimate partner violence (IPV) investigation.

Sarnia police responded to a report of an assault involving people in a dating relationship on Sunday, January 18.

During the investigation, officers learned the accused was a licensed firearms holder.

The following day police attended a home on Confederation Street, and arrested the accused without incident.

Police said in the interest of public safety, officers seized several firearms from the home, including a sawed-off, semi-automatic 22 calibre rifle, which is classified as a prohibited firearm under the criminal code.

The accused is charged with assault, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized.

Police said no names will be released to protect the victim's identity.
