Emergency services to compete in Battle of the Badges for charity

It's an opportunity to secure bragging rights while raising some much needed funds for a great community organization.

The Battle of the Badges hockey game, on January 24 at 4 p.m. at Progressive Auto Sales Arena, will pit members of the Sarnia Police Service against Sarnia Fire Rescue.

Tickets are $25 and $5 from each sale will benefit the Huron House Boys Home in Brights Grove.

The departments have a friendly competition to see who can sell the most tickets. When you buy them online, you can choose to support either police or the fire department.

Sarnia Deputy Police Chief Mike Van Sickle said it's always a friendly rivalry.

"We work great together and we're looking forward to having a great hockey game out there," said Van Sickle. "It is going to be competitive. I know that Sarnia Fire Rescue is going to be able to put a very competitive team on the ice. We're happy with some of the additions we've made to our team this year. I just hope it's a good, entertaining hockey game."

Van Sickle said they have a long standing partnership with Huron House Boys Home, including their work with the agency's annual run.

He said he's been relegated to the sidelines this year and will be coaching his team.

"I'm getting squeezed out by the youth movement," he laughed. "I'm working really hard on the backend to identify the top end talent within the organization to put out on the ice."

The police squad has some talent, including former Sting defenceman Jamie Fraser.

Firefighter and former Sarnia Legionnaires defenceman Tom Moxley is looking forward to it.

"The team is pretty excited, we're looking forward to a fun community event with our partners from Sarnia police and the Sarnia Sting," said Moxley. "It's really going to be a fun event. We've got a pretty tight knit community. We're friends with a lot of the police officers that are playing. There's obviously a bit of a rivalry for sure but it seems to be all in good fun so far."

The Huron House Boys Home is a dedicated children’s mental health live-in treatment centre, aimed at fostering community engagement, educational achievement, positive transformation, and personal responsibility.

It provides a treatment-based environment for boys aged 12 to 18, helping them grow, learn, and build a positive path forward.

A ticket to the Battle of the Badges also includes admission to the Sarnia Sting game against the Peterborough Petes, with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Fans are being reminded that when they enter the arena for Battle of the Badges, the no re-entry policy will be in effect for the remainder of the evening.

You can visit the Sarnia Sting's website to secure your seats.
