Newly launched Kiwanis Club to host inaugural fundraiser

The newly formed Kiwanis Club of Corunna-St. Clair is seeking participants for its first official fundraising event.

Public Relations and Media Chair Michelle Agar said they're planning a trivia night.

"We're hosting that on February 27 at 7 p.m. at the St. Clair Parkway Golf Course in Mooretown," Agar said. "All the information is on our Facebook page and people can just send us an e-mail, which they can find on our page, with their team information and they can send us an e-transfer to sign up and we'll hold their spot."

The cost is $60 to enter a team of four. Additional members can be added for $10 per person, to a maximum of six team members.

Agar said the club launched last fall with the help of a Sarnia club member.

"We officially formed in September, we had our big charter ceremony then. One of our members is [also] a member of the Seaway Kiwanis, she started this club and she's acting as a coach for us right now," Agar said.

A Kiwanis charter ceremony is a formal celebration marking the official organization and launch of a new Kiwanis club.

Agar said they currently have about 15 members.

"We're always looking for new members to join us, so if anyone's interested they can reach out to any of the members and come to a meeting and check it out. We've done a few things in the community. We had a barbecue last year, and all of the money we raised from that went to Operation Christmas Tree here in Corunna," said Agar.

She said they're just hoping to reach kids and youth in the community and create some safe, positive places for local children.

"Aside from school, if kids aren't involved in sports, there's just not always a lot of options. So, we just want to create spaces where its welcoming for everyone and we're serving the youth in the community. That's kind of what Kiwanis' goal is everywhere," Agar said.

She said a few teachers are among the membership, which also helps build the connection with area youth.
