Local MP expresses concern for Canadians in Mexico

MP Marilyn Gladu said she is thinking of all Canadians from Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong who are currently affected by the ongoing conflict in Mexico.

Canadians who are currently in Mexico are asked to register with Global Affairs Canada (GAC). Registration allows Canadian officials to provide you with direct updates and important instructions as conditions evolve.

"The government has updated their website with a way that Canadians can register, so that if they do get into difficulty, they can easily contact the government for assistance. They have, as well, the number for the embassy in the area of Mexico where trouble is happening, and certainly my office is available to assist as needed," said Gladu. "It's a dynamic situation. So I would just continue to pay attention to the government updates and watch to see what the situation is."

GAC is telling Canadians in some regions to shelter in place, while in other areas, citizens are told to exercise a high degree of caution.

"Our priority is to make sure that Canadians are safe and sound, and if they are in a dangerous situation in Mexico, to make sure that they are safely brought back to Canada as soon as possible," said Gladu.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says more than 8,000 Canadians in Mexico contacted Global Affairs between Sunday and Monday, pushing the number registered there to over 26,000 as of Monday evening.

It comes after widespread violence was reported in several regions across Mexico, following the death of "El Mencho," leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Meanwhile, in a post to social media on Monday, Air Canada said full operations from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta will start up again on Tuesday.
