Sarnia police K9 Vader is credited with finding a suspect in a dumpster after a man fled the scene of a crash near the Northgate Plaza.
On Tuesday, just after 6 p.m., officers were called to Elgin Street for a possible impaired driver and welfare check.
It's alleged a man in a silver Dodge Caravan was behaving erratically, striking his head off the steering wheel, and opening and closing the door many times without exiting the vehicle.
Police said the driver fled the scene, heading east on Elgin Street, south on Russell Street, and west on London Road, where he crossed into the oncoming lanes of traffic.
Officers stopped their pursuit due to public safety.
Shortly after, police were called about a crash in the area of East Street and Exmouth Street. The suspect allegedly failed to stop at a red light, hit another vehicle, and took off down Exmouth.
Police said the van was found in front of a nearby business with its airbags deployed.
The driver ran from the scene but was found by K9 Vader in a dumpster behind businesses in an alleyway.
Police called out to the accused, and he came out of the dumpster and surrendered without further incident.
A 26-year-old man was arrested, and charged with dangerous operation, failing to stop at an accident, and flight from police.
