Sarnia council briefs

City council awarded multiple contracts for road reconstruction projects, including Johnston and Queen Street, Kathleen Avenue, and Copland Road.

In the meantime, General Manager of Engineering and Operations David Jackson said the city will start to ramp up pothole patching.

"It's still not ideal temperatures for that, and so it's still a temporary job," Jackson said. "When the asphalt plants open in May, we'll be doing some larger repairs."

Council also approved a paving contract for McGregor Sideroad between Plank Road and Gladwish Drive.

City council has endorsed concept 1 for the Sarnia Business and Research Park, which includes 20 industrial lots.

The concept will be used as a reference plan for detailed engineering.

A tree compensation agreement has been reached, which will see the Pamela Court condo developer pay just over $30,000 for trees to be planted on city-owned land.

Council approved a six-unit draft plan on March 9 and directed staff to work on a cash-in-lieu payment option as compensation for the trees removed on-site.

As part of the agreement, the city will work with the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) to find suitable locations to plant seedlings.

Areas under consideration include Mike Weir Park and the city's sewage lagoon site near Bright’s Grove.

A $1.8 million contract was awarded to Birnam Excavating Ltd. to complete upgrades at the Talfourd Pump Station, located at the corner of Indian Road South and Talfourd Street.

Council also accepted a $97,689 quote from B.M. Ross and Associates Ltd. as the single-source consultant for the project.

The upgrades are part of an ongoing effort to mitigate flooding and sewer backups in the Coronation Park area. The project will provide a 50 per cent increase to the wastewater pumping capacity of the Talfourd Pump Station, read a report to council.
