Walpole man faces charges after traffic stop leads to firearms seizure

A man is facing several charges after guns were seized during a traffic stop on Walpole Island First Nation.

Just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, police officers on patrol pulled over a vehicle on Chiefs Road. The Walpole Island Police Service (WIPS) called in Lambton OPP as further testing was required.

Thomas Altiman, 26, of Walpole Island First Nation was arrested and now faces the following charges:

-Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

-Failure or refusal to comply with demand

-Unauthorized possession of a firearm (two counts)

-Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm (two counts)

-Transport firearm, weapon prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner (two counts)

-Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (two counts)

-Mischief - interfere with lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property - under $5000

-Drive motor vehicle - no licence

-Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor

Police say his licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impoinded for seven days.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court in Sarnia.
