Alvinston retiree wins big in LOTTO 6/49 draw

A retiree from Alvinston is all smiles after winning a prize of $130,617 in the February 28 LOTTO 6/49 draw.

Nancy Shepley said she’s been playing the lottery with Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) for over 20 years, and this is her first major win.

Shepley said she checked the ticket on her phone in the early morning, and discovered she won big.

"I was so shocked and couldn’t believe my eyes," the 60-year-old said while visiting the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect her winnings. “It felt so unreal!”

Shepley recalled her husband was making breakfast at the time and she told him she had to show him something.

“He replied, ‘Honey, I’m in the middle of something can it wait?’ I giggled and said, ‘It can, but I’m sure you’d want to know now!," said Shepley. "I showed him my phone screen and his face went blank. He was in complete disbelief! He finished cooking and we enjoyed the meal as a family, even though our minds weren’t fully present. As we ate our eggs, all we could think about was this winning ticket!”

Shepley went on to share the great news with her daughter and sister-in-law, both of whom were very happy for her.

With her windfall, she plans to pay some bills and purchase a new oven.

“Words can’t even begin to describe how I’m feeling, it’s just incredible!” she said. “I feel beyond grateful, especially since it’s my birth month. This win has brought so much joy and excitement.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Heidi's Your Independent Grocer on Petrolia Street in Petrolia.
